Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth
What is Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous earth is a remarkable, all-natural product made from tiny fossilized water plants. It is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms.
These plants have been part of the earth’s ecology since prehistoric times. It is believed that 30 million years ago the diatoms built up into deep, chalky deposits of diatomite.
The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a powder that looks and feels like talcum powder. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium.
Although Diatomaceous Earth is a natural compound and a natural grade diatomite, the continual breathing of any dust should be avoided, especially for those who have any respiratory disorders.
Alternative Health Properties of Diatomaceous Earth
- Food Grade diatomaceous earth offers important benefits to humans.
- Pool Filter grade diatomaceous earth has been heat and chemically treated and will poison an animal or human who ingests it, so it is always of utmost importance to only obtain food grade diatomaceous earth to use in and around your household.
In the past, humans were able to consume enough silica in food, but as modern hybrid foods and toxic soil became a reality, studies suggest that only about 1/3 of the silica that we need is present in our fruits and vegetables. This is a sad fact, given that silica is such a necessary component for the health of our tendons, cartilage, blood vessels, and bones. It is also needed for the health and strength of our skin, teeth and nails. It even contributes to the health of almost all of our vital organs, including the heart, liver and lungs.
Silica is an important trace mineral for human beings, and one that many are unaware that they need. Dr. Barbara Hendel, author of “Water & Salt” has even stated that, “Silica is the most important trace mineral for human health.”
The oldest use of diatomaceous earth has been as a toothpaste and facial scrub, due to its mild abrasive capacities. Similarly, it acts as a mild abrasive in animals, removing intestinal invaders and other harmful organisms from the digestive tract, stimulating digestion and absorption of nutrients by sweeping foreign bodies out of the system.
Diatomaceous earth kills all bugs. It has been reported to be the most effective solution when fighting pests like fleas, ants and bed bugs.
Farmers dump food grade diatomaceous earth by big scoops in with grains when the grains are stored. It kills the insects that want to feast on the grain. This is a great improvement over the stuff they used to put in with the grain.
Other Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth:
- Increases mineral absorption: As silica is water-soluble and does not remain in the body for very long, supplementing with diatomaceous earth aids the body in keeping optimal absorption of these important minerals.
- May aid in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.
- May contribute to more regular bowel movements, as it acts as an internal cleansing aid.
- Used in livestock feed to control intestinal parasites, which are lacerated by the abrasiveness of diatomaceous earth. It has also shown great success in ridding animals of E.coli, as well as other forms of bacteria and viruses.
- Contains anti-fungal properties.
- Acts as a powerful overall detoxification agent — A strong natural chelation agent, diatomaceous earth sucks heavy metals (such as those contained in vaccines, drinking water and foods.
Other Interesting Info and Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous earth is often used as a natural insecticide, as its absorption properties actually dehydrate the waxy outer layer off of the insects’ exoskeleton, causing them to expire. Food and medical-grade diatomaceous earth is also used as a safe and non-toxic way to de-worm pets, and it has even been used as a natural form of cat litter. The U.S. Centers for Disease control recommends it as a natural method for neutralizing toxic spills. It is also a common ingredient in oil-absorbing natural facial products and masks.
Diatomaceous earth (DE) Fossil Shell Flour has been reported in scientific literature to absorb methyl mercury, E. coli, endotoxins, viruses (including poliovirus), organophosphate pesticide residues, drug residues, and protein, perhaps even the proteinaceous toxins produced by some intestinal infections.
“Detox”-ing one’s system too quickly might not allow enough time for one’s metabolism to re-balance, creating discomfort known as “healing crisis”. This discomfort may be nothing more than inflammation caused by a REAWAKENING immune system as it detoxifies and begins to attack previously unaddressed chronic infections. Working up the amount slowly from about a teaspoon to a rounded tablespoon over a few days or weeks may help to avoid this situation. A heaping tablespoonful, as much as we recommend, in water before bed or first thing in the morning, if one doesn’t normally eat an early breakfast, will allow the Fossil Shell Flour DE time to move through and absorb toxins from one’s digestive tract without interference and without absorbing nutrients from foods or liquids.
TOXIC METAL exposure is a serious problem in the ecosystem worldwide, and elements such as mercury, uranium, plutonium, cadmium, bismuth, nickel, silver, and even gold, platinum, and palladium are all suspected of being problematic for the immune system and of causing a wide spectrum of disease symptoms also the use of so-called “depleted uranium” weapons in armed conflicts is suspected of contributing an array of health problems.
Nickel is present in all sorts of personal items, from eye-glass frames, the backs of watches, and jewelry to the change we carry around in our pockets. Nickel-containing under wires and the hooks and fasteners in bras my contribute to the 125-fold greater risk of breast cancer in women wearing bras 24 hours a day, compared to those who do not wear bras. Iron supplements much higher than the 10 mg/day recommended for men and post-menopausal women (18 mg/day for pre-menopausal women) can cause serious health problems, including colon cancer.
Mercury toxicity? – is one of the most difficult to answer, because mercury attacks the body in so many ways. Mercury kills cells by interfering with their ability to exchange oxygen, nutrients, and waste products through the cell membrane. Inside the cell, mercury destroys our genetic code, DNA, leaving us without the ability to reproduce that cell ever again. Chronic fatigue syndrome also has a mercury component.
Amalgam is the generic term for the most commonly used dental filling in the world, silver-mercury amalgam. Amalgam is a mixture of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and zinc. Mercury comprises the largest portion (around 50 percent).
What happens to mercury when it comes out of a filling? Mercury is highly reactive chemically. In the mouth, mercury has the ability to combine with a carbon-hydrogen compound called a methyl group. Methyl mercury is 100 times more toxic than plain, elemental mercury. It is especially toxic to the brain and nerve tissue, which may explain amalgam’s relationship to MS, epilepsy, and emotional disturbances.
Mercury does come out of fillings; it does produce a toxic compound that is given off as the fillings corrode; and enough of this substance does form to cause disease. This by itself should make us pretty sure it can cause a health problem. If 100,000 of the 140,000 dentists in the United States place nine fillings per day each – about three hours’ worth of work – that is 900,000 mercury fillings per day.
90.2 percent of us are reactive to mercury. What sort of reaction should we expect? The ways in which mercury attacks the body can be identified in five categories. The categories are: neurological, cardiovascular, collagen, immunological, and miscellaneous.
Neurological problems encompass two divisions, motor and sensory. An example of motor problems would be tremors, while sensory might be brainfog (spaciness), short-term memory problems, or depression. The percentages of patients exhibiting these mercury-caused problems are: depression, 73.3 percent; numb fingers or toes, 67.3 percent; memory problems, 58.0 percent; and jitteriness or nervousness, 38.1 percent.
As with many aspects of mercury toxicity, the term “unexplained” precedes the names of specific mercury-induced cardiovascular symptoms. Heart attacks have a specific cause. Mercury-caused problems are elusive. The percentages I have found are: unexplained chest pains, 35.6 percent, and unexplained tachycardia, 32.4 percent.
The most common problem in the collagen category is arthritis. Constant or frequent pain in the joints constitutes 35.5 percent of the symptoms in this category.
Immunological disorders are probably the most significant category, as shown by studies done in laboratory on over 3,500 people. Over 90 percent of these people demonstrated immune reactivity. This is most often seen in what are called autoimmune diseases, or diseases in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. Examples of autoimmune diseases include MS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), lupus erythematosus, diabetes, certain types of arthritis, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
The miscellaneous category gets crowded. Some of the symptoms include: frequent urination, 64.5 percent; chronic fatigue, 63.1 percent; bloated feeling after eating, 60.6 percent; recurring constipation, 54.6 percent; ringing in the ears, 47.8 percent; metallic taste in the mouth, 38.7 percent; suicidal thoughts, 37.3 percent; and headaches after eating, 20.1 percent. The miscellaneous category also includes allergies. Many of today’s food and airborne allergies seem to show a correlation between placement of fillings and the onset of these allergies. With allergies, just removing the offending fillings, unfortunately, does not bring about an alleviation of symptoms.
What if mercury is present? The bloodstream is the primary avenue for mercury to enter and exit the body. Recent dental journal articles show that there is a relationship between blood levels of mercury and the number of silver-mercury fillings present in the mouth. Researched and published articles show that at autopsy, people’s brain levels of mercury corresponded with the number of silver fillings in their mouths.”
Calcium. Bone density is controlled by the minerals, magnesium and manganese. Because both calcium and magnesium activate the process that begins the production of energy, and because calcium is necessary for the absorption of magnesium, it is easy to understand that the proper amount of biologically active calcium at the cellular level is necessary for you to have a good energy level.
- Helps to control the glucose level
- Aids in the calcification of teeth
- Works with magnesium to prevent muscle cramping
- Aids in the development of the inner and outer ear
- Works with magnesium in the control of hyperkinetic and autistic behavior in children
- Aids in nerve impulse transmission
- Helps prevent tingling and numbness in the limbs
- Works with zinc in the prevention of birth defects
- The action of manganese is blocked by mercury
Mercury. Although amalgams are the biggest source of exposure to mercury, they are not the only source. Probably the greatest dietary source of mercury is tuna. This is followed closely by shellfish like lobster and shrimp. As a rule, the larger the fish, the greater the amount of mercury it contains. As you have probably realized by now, any amount of mercury in the diet can be considered too much.
Zinc. Zinc is essential in the activation of over 80 percent of the body’s enzyme systems. Perhaps one of its most important functions is in helping to control glucose levels. It is also important I the growth of bone, and, along with magnesium, is vital in the healing process. Zinc is very important in the development of children. Keep this in mind during pregnancy if your dentist wants to place an amalgam. Mercury, by deactivating zinc, can contribute to birth defects. You should avoid sugar, alcohol, and caffeine if your zinc level is deficient, as is seen in so many mercury-toxic patients.
Magnesium. Where there is a lack of magnesium, there is also a higher potential for tooth decay, so as a means of controlling dental problems, magnesium is essential. Alcohol lowers magnesium levels.
Chromium. Low levels of chromium are found in patients who habitually eat large amounts of carbohydrates. A high intake of carbohydrates will lower chromium levels because chromium is necessary in the activation of insulin and is part of what is known as the glucose tolerance factor. Most people do not get sufficient amounts of chromium from the foods they eat It is necessary to be very strict about dietary control and taking supplementation.
Potassium. Nearly all medications and drugs will upset potassium metabolism. Potassium deficiency and / or contamination is characteristic of MS patients, and is the number-two deficiency in the periodontal patient.”
“Some of the most common exposures to mercury come through foods, cosmetics, medications, household chemicals, gardening chemicals, and other items that contain high levels of mercury, as well as professions and industries in which people are exposed to mercury. You can see how many places mercury is used in our modern environment. It is impossible to avoid all sources.”
Avoid exposure to toxic metal and other forms of toxins as much as possible, and consider using DE Fossil Shell Flour to detoxify, thereby helping to protect ourselves from the many harmful effects of unavoidable exposures.
Another avenue of toxic exposure comes from cooking and serving ware, such as when acidic foods, like tomatoes, come in contact with stainless steel. Brightly colored, low-temperature-fired pottery and stainless steel alloys can contain toxic metal components that are capable of poisoning us when acidic foods leach toxins from the pots, pans, and flatware. Aluminum and other metal toxins are potential hazards in this regard, with possible connections to Alzheimer’s syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, and other associated problems. Pottery (also GLASSWARE) that has been properly glazed and fired (such as crock pots, stoneware and porcelain), and untreated wooden and ceramic utensils provide safer alternatives than items containing toxic metals. TITANIUM also appears to be a safer alternative than other metals for cookware, eyeglass frames, jewelry, and other materials that contact our bodies, food, or water, but only when it is NOT alloyed with other toxins or carcinogens.
Diatomaceous Earth is 89% SILICA.
..There is no life without SILICA. (Silicon Dioxide).
SILICA plays an important role in many bodily functions and has a direct relationship to mineral absorption. The average human body wants around seven grams of SILICA, an amount far exceeding the needs for other important minerals like iron. We need more than we normally get.
BENEFITS OF SILICA:
FOR JOINT PAIN: Osteoporosis is usually a symptom of aging. As calcium in our body system depletes, our bones become brittle and weak. Taking a calcium supplement without enough SILICA cannot correct this threatening and crippling disease because the body can’t assimilate the calcium without the presence of enough SILICA.
Evidence suggests that taking mineral calcium supplements without enough SILCA in your body can actually promote the leaching out of bone calcium and hasten the onslaught of osteoporosis and other diseases that negatively effect your supportive and connective tissues.
For osteoporosis, SILICA can stop the pain and even restore the body’s self repair process. Osteoporosis symptoms attack women primarily after menopause but the degenerative process starts much earlier in life. More women are dying of fractures caused by osteoporosis than of cancer of the breast, cervix, and uterus combined.
SILICA is responsible for the depositing of minerals into the bones, especially calcium. It speeds up the healing of fractures and also reduces scarring at the site of a fracture. More and more research evidence shows that through a transmutation process, silica is turned into calcium when it is needed. That is the reason why many top scientists report that
Silica Is An Effective Precursor Of Calcium In The Human Body.
(The body turns SILICA into calcium when the body needs calcium).
Nature’s Internal Cosmetic!
In Europe and Asia Diatomaceous Earth is used extensively as a health and beauty product for hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. They have no FDA.
Tissue degeneration accelerates due to aging when connective tissue develops an increasing inability to retain moisture when left unassisted. Silica can help slow the degenerative process of connective tissue. With silica, vitality and life, which are often lost as the years accumulate, can be naturally maintained or even restored to your skin. Collagen, largely made up of silica, is the glue that holds us together. If our body has enough silica glucosaminoglycane, the collagen will make us look younger. Silica helps with skin problems and injuries including itching, rashes, abscesses, boils, acne, callouses, warts, eczemas, burns, frostbite, benign skin sores, insect bites and bed sores.
The restorative effects of silica will be most noticeable on your hair, skin, nails and teeth. Our skin and hair REQUIRE silica as do other tissues in our bodies. As we know, the supporting collagen underneath the skin enhances elasticity and beauty. Collagen owes that quality to silica, which provides a beautiful complexion that is more than skin deep.
Hair That Grows!
Hair is natures greatest beauty enhancer. Hair deserves to be pampered. Hair at 90 micrograms per gram is almost as rich in silica as are healthy bones, which contain 100 micrograms per gram. Silica is a major component of hair. Using a good silica supplement should be part of your ongoing hair care program for revitalizing hair. Silica helps to prevent baldness, stimulates healthier hair growth and assures beautiful shine, luster and strength.
Teeth and Gums!
By hardening the enamel, silica prevents cavities and preserves teeth. Silica also prevents bleeding gums, gum atrophy, and recession that causes the loosening of teeth, which could ultimately lead to tooth loss. Silica effectively fights ulceration and the decay of bones and teeth and also lessens inflammation.
Tough As Nails!
Your nail plates are complex protein structures that grow four to five millimeters per month on average. With silica supplementation, fragile nails become normal within a short period of time. Silica will beautify the appearance of your nails and improve their hardness, making them shinier and less prone to breaking.
MORE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SILICA AND FOOD GRADE DE:
. Silica lowers bad cholesterol and raises good
• Silica fades age spots
• Silica stimulates metabolism for higher energy levels
• Diatomaceous earth has a negative charge and bacteria has a positive charge. It is believed that diatomaceous earth sweeps bacteria out of the body by trapping it in it”s honeycomb shaped skeletal form.
• Silica supplementation helps repair and maintain vital lung tissues and protects them from pollution. By maintaining or restoring the elasticity of lung tissues, silica reduces inflammation in bronchitis.
• It acts as a cough decreasing agent. Silica tones the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx) and reduces swelling because of its positive action on the lymphatic system.
• Silica supplementation keeps menopause free of stress and helps to prevent many unwanted side-effects of menopause
• Cancer can not survive in cells that have the correct levels of Silica.
• Silica works with other antioxidants to prevent premature aging and to preserve youthfulness.
• Silica can help prevent kidney stones and heal infections of the urinary tract. It is a natural diuretic which can increase excretion of urine by 30 percent, thus flushing the water-excreting system and restoring normal function to these vital organs.
• The presence of sufficient silica in the intestines will reduce inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can cause disinfection in the case of stomach and intestinal mucus and ulcers. Silica can prevent or clear up diarrhea and its opposite, constipation.
• Silica will help normalize hemorrhoidal tissues.
• In regulating and normalizing the bowels, silica has a pleasant side effect; it can alleviate lower back pain, which often troubles the elderly.
• Silica proves effective with female discharge, abscesses and ulcers in the genital area and cervix, as well as mastitis (especially for breast feeding mothers).
• The intake of silica acts as a supportive treatment for inflammation of the middle ear. Because of the beneficial effectiveness on the lymphatic system, silica can be used for swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat.
• Has anti-inflammatory disinfecting, absorbing and odor binding effects.
• Silica can normalize circulation and regulate high blood pressure (hypertension).
• Silica can decrease vertigo, headache, tinnitus (buzzing of the ears) and insomnia.
• Silica can help diabetes by promoting synthesis of elastase inhibitor by the pancreas.
• Silica can help arterial disease by strengthening the blood vessels. Studies confirm that with age, silica disappears from the aorta, the heart’s key blood vessel— thus weakening its critical connective tissue and resulting in a greater cardiac risk.
• Silica can help prevent Tuberculosis.
• By improving the elasticity of the joints, silica helps rheumatism.
• Silica has inhibitory effects on coronary diseases.
• Silica can help avoiding or alleviating Alzheimers disease by preventing the body from absorbing aluminum and may flush out aluminum from the tissues.• Silica can stimulate the immune system.
Daily silica needs of humans are 20-30 mg. In Years past, our bodies would get enough silica from our diet. Unfortunately, many of the foods we now eat have lost their nutritional value due to soil nutrient depletion, food processing, and chemicalsA any excess silica not needed by the body is automatically eliminated through the blood stream, kidneys and intestines.
How Diatomaceous Earth Works*
When Diatomaceous Earth is taken into the body it does its work in 3 different ways:
It looks like a cylinder full of holes–kind of like Rice Chex Cereal. This cylinder has a very strong negative charge. As these millions of cylinders move through the stomach and digestive tract, they attract and absorb bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticide and drug residues, E-Coli, and heavy metals. These are trapped inside the cylinder and passed out of the body. In addition, any larger parasites that happen to be in the stomach of digestive tract are “cut up” and killed by the sharp edges of the Diatomaceous Earth. All of these activities result in a much healthier body with less sickness. Many folks comment that they ‘just feel better’ when they take DE. This better feeling comes from all the “junk” being removed from the body and giving the immune system the “jump start” it needs.
Diatomaceous Earth is very hard. On the harness scale where diamonds are a 9, Diatomaceous Earth is a 7. This is very important, because as those millions of tiny hard and sharp Diatomaceous Earth cylinders pass through the small and large intestines, they “scrub” the walls. After only a few months of taking Diatomaceous Earth, the intestine wall is no longer coated with mucus, and molds but CLEAN!!. The advantages of this are several:
1. Regular bowel movements (This is the #1 comment everyone makes about DE)
2. Healthier Colon. This is especially important as we get older. A clean healthy colon keeps away polyps, cancers, and ulcers. Today, many are spending thousands of dollars to get colonics to do the same thing as Diatomaceous Earth does.
3. Many users report increased energy and needing less sleep. This is a result of all the food and nutrients that are taken in being better absorbed into the blood stream. With a coated colon–many nutrients never get absorbed.
A small amount of Diatomaceous Earth gets absorbed into the blood stream. As these cylinders move throughout the body, they clean and breakup buildups in the blood vessels and also destroy bad fats. Folks that take DE usually see a 40-50 point decrease in bad cholesterol. And they are shocked at how their high blood pressure also goes down. As the Diatomaceous Earth eventually dissolves in the blood, the many benefits of the silica content are realized.
1. Sore joints and ligaments feel dramatically better
2. Skin clears up (acne-age spots-psoriasis)
3. Hair and nails are stronger and grow faster
4. Stronger teeth and gums
5. Healthier respiratory tract–less coughing
6. Menopause has less symptoms
7. Healthier urinary tract
The benefits of silica are many. In today’s grains, there is actually a silica shortage. Years ago, the silica in our foodstuffs was adequate, but with today’s hybrids and depleted soils, only about 1/3 of the silica needed is supplied in our food. Diatomaceous Earth is a simple and inexpensive way to get the silica your body needs.
Food Grade DE for combating Parvo virus in dogs and puppies
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) kills viruses and bacteria quickly. I administer 2 doses of the DE at 1/2 teaspoon per dose. If you want to hit the virus/bacteria hard, give a dose of the DE broth every 2-3 hours.
How does it work?
To insects DE is a lethal dust with microscopic razor sharp edges. These sharp edges cut through the insect’s protective covering drying it out and killing them when they are either dusted with DE or if it applied as a wettable powder spray. If they ingest the DE it will shred their insides.
What insects can DE be used for?
Diatomaceous Earth may be used as a barrier to control adult flea beetles, sawfly, coddling moth, twig borer, thrips, mites, cockroach, slugs, snails and many other insects such as:
Aphids, earwigs, silverfish, and ants. Can be used for bedbugs, cabbage root flies, carrot root flies, fleas, pillbugs, ticks and is helpful in dealing with fungus gnats.
Indoor and Outdoor Application: Sprinkle a light layer of DE in areas where pests frequent, including under stoves, cabinets, sinks, garbage cans, window and door frames and sills, entrance ways, sewer pipes and drains, and in cracks and crevices. Repeat treatment as needed.
Carpet Beetles: Thoroughly dust along baseboards, carpet edges, under furniture, carpet, and rugs, and in closets and shelving.
Bedbugs: Take apart bed and dust joints and channels. Dust any hollow tubing and the interior framework as well as the mattress and all cracks in the room.
Fleas: Thoroughly dust carpets and pet’s bedding and sleeping areas, as well as cracks and baseboards. It also can be rubbed into your pet’s fur.
Flies: Thoroughly dust areas where flies frequent (walls, straw bedding, livestock pens). It also can be applied to livestock coat as an insect repellent/contact insecticide.
Fly Larva: Keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, which makes a significant reduction in the fly population.
|Organic Garden Pest Control:
Diatomaceous Earth is a natural, organic insect killer. It kills by physical action and not by chemical so there is NO harm to pets or humans. The tiny hard and sharp diatoms scratch off the insects waxy coating, causing it to dehydrate. Food grade Diatomaceous Earth will not harm earthworms or beneficial soil microorganisms. For control of aphids, white fly, beetles, loopers, mites, leaf hoppers, and others, use Diatomaceous Earth inside your home, greenhouse or outdoors on fruits, vegetables, flowers, grains and grass, up to and including day of harvest. For dry application of Diatomaceous Earth use a duster and cover entire plant, apply to both top and bottom of leaf. For young plants, as little as two pounds per acre may be adequate. For larger plants, five lbs. per acre is probably sufficient. Diatomaceous Earth will need reapplication after a rain. Applies best when there is dew or after a light rain. It is a long lasting, effective powder. The insects can not build up resistance. Diatomaceous Earth will not harm earthworms or beneficial soil microorganisms. Wear a dust mask when applying large amounts of it.
Just add 7-10 lbs. of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth to each ton of grain as it is conveyed into the storage. When added to grain, it not only makes it flow better, Diatomaceous Earth kills the bugs that are present and protects the grain from further invasions. Bugs cannot become immune because they are killed by physical action, not chemical.
Household Pests & Insects:
Use our food grade Diatomaceous Earth for control of roaches, silverfish, ants, bedbugs, flies, fleas, box elder bugs, scorpions, crickets, and many other insects. Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth can be used in and around the home, yard, animal housing, and is PERFECTLY SAFE TO USE AROUND FAMILY AND PETS! Any breathing problems are much like the use of BABY POWDER. It’s non-toxic, and kills household insects physically, not with poisons.
Daily recommended food grade diatomaceous earth feeding rates:
Kittens – 1/2 teaspoon
Cats – 1 teaspoon
Puppies – 1/2 to 1 tsp.
Dogs under 35 lbs. – 1 teaspoon
Dogs over 35 lbs. – 1 tablespoon
Dogs over 100 lbs. – 2 tablespoons
Cattle, Dairy Cows, & Hogs – 2% of dry feed ration
Chickens – 5% in feed
Goats, Sheep, Alpacas, & Llamas – 2% in grain
Horses – 1/2 to 1 cup in daily ration
Zoo animals – 2% in daily feed
*Humans – 1 heaping tablespoon daily
Internal feeding of food grade diatomaceous earth helps eliminate most internal worms, including roundworms, pin worms, tapeworms, etc. It’s also excellent when fed daily to keep down fly loads, since food grade diatomaceous earth is eliminated from the body, exactly the way it went in, it helps reduce the manure odor and kills flies that come in contact with it.
Mix in animal feed or grain and/or feed free choice. My horses, dogs, cats and chickens eat it daily in their feed.
*Some recommend to dose humans by mixing food grade diatomaceous earth in a glass of water before bed or first thing in the morning, well before breakfast, to allow diatomaceous earth time to move through and absorb toxins from ones digestive tract without interfering or absorbing nutrients from foods or liquids. Some report great results consuming 1 tsp. in a glass of water prior to each meal, 3x/day.
If fecal counts are not zero for worms and ova after feeding DE for 30 days, increase the daily dose. Feeding too small a dose of DE will not give desired results. Increasing the dose, even if greater than the above recommendations, will not harm anyone. Some horses do fine on 1/2 cup of DE daily, others need a full cup. This reminds us, that all beings are different. So again, if the worm and ova counts are not zero, increase your daily dose.
Make a paste with Diatomaceous Earth and water to make a metal polish. Diatomaceous Earth also makes a very inexpensive soft scrub for the shower, sink and faucets.
|Face Mask and Cleanser:
Mix Diatomaceous Earth and Water together until you have made a paste. Apply to the face with circular scrubbing motion until face is fully covered. Leave on face for approx. 2 min. and then wash off with warm water. Your face will be fully exfoliated and toned for pennies!!! Mix Diatomaceous Earth with your favorite cleanser and you will have cleaner, smoother skin.
Sprinkle a small amount on your favorite brand of toothpaste and brush as you normally would. You will notice that your teeth look and feel “Just went to the Dentist” Clean.
Some Suggested Livestock Feeding and Application Rates:
|Beef Cattle||1% of total weight of dry ration 5% in grain|
|Dairy Cattle||1% of total weight of dry ration|
|Calves||4 grams in morning milk per calf|
|Chickens||5% in feed, use at full strength in dusting boxes|
|Hogs||2% of total feed ration, dust or spray on bedding and animals|
|Horses||5 ounces (1 cup) in daily feed ration|
|Sheep||1% in ground grains 1 part Diatomaceous Earth to 2 parts T-M salt|
|Goats||1% in grain, 5% per bushel of feed: up to 50% in T-M salt|
For large animals, DE may also be offered “free Choice” if the dispenser is protected from the wind. Your livestock will also benefit from the over 14 trace minerals in Diatomaceous Earth.
IS FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH SAFE TO USE DURING PREGNANCY? Definitely! When food grade diatomaceous earth is fed in adequate daily amounts, it eliminates all intestinal worms and parasites. This helps the human or animal better absorb the nutrients from the food they eat, which in turn benefits the being, but also greatly benefits the unborn infant or animals by passing on these nutrients to them helping to make them stronger and healthier as well.
For human use it is best to start at a small dose – 1/2 teaspoon for the first few days while making sure to drink plenty of clean fresh pure water (not city tap water) and slowly increasing the dose as your body tells you it is okay to do so and to make sure you don’t have a heavy detox.
HOME APPLICATIONS: If you are building a new home, barn, or other structure that is the perfect time to use DE and apply it on the inside of the walls, before installing insulation, in the attic, etc. to prevent pesky bugs now and in the future. DE helps provide a nice safe home environment that doesn’t have fleas, mites, ticks, flies, silverfish, cockroaches, bedbugs, centipedes, earwigs, ants – carpenter ants, red ants, black ants, and all other insects and bugs.
Food grade DE can be applied along baseboards, under appliances, inside cabinets and drawers, inside wall outlets, lightly in carpeting, and anywhere you are having an insect problem. Test lightly in an area of your home that you want to apply it to make sure you and your family don’t have a reaction to it, then apply or reapply as needed. Bugs lay larvae or eggs, so DE must be left out long enough for the hatchlings to come in contact with it. You can vacuum the treated areas once/week (make sure some DE is in the vacuum bag to dehydrate any live insects you vacuum up), then reapply if needed. Since most insects have a laying cycle of 7 to 21 days, we recommend treating inside the home for at least 30 days for best effectiveness.
If the insect problem is coming from outside the home and the insects are now residing in your home, treat both outside the home and inside at the same time for maximum effectiveness.
EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS FOR DOGS & CATS: Lightly rub food grade diatomaceous earth into pets coat, fur, and bedding to dehydrate fleas, lice, mites, and ticks. Dust them lightly, but thoroughly, as in order to kill the parasites, they must come in contact with the DE.
Note: external application can take up to 72 hours to dehydrate external parasites.
Lightly sprinkle in household carpet. Leave for 2-3+ days, then vacuum. Please do not get heavy handed with the DE in your carpet, as I have heard from some people advising it causes problems with their vacuum.
EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS FOR LIVESTOCK, BARNS, COOPS, KENNELS, & LITTER BOXES: I use DE throughout the barn, fowl coops, and pastures. When mucking the barn and coops, I lightly, but thoroughly sprinkle diatomaceous earth absolutely everywhere! It keeps the cleansed and dry. In between barn mucking, I sprinkle diatomaceous earth on wet spots to help dry them out and keep flies from laying eggs. It helps keep the crickets, ants, silverfish, roaches, earwigs, flies, mites, and all other disgusting insects from bothering us and our wonderful animals.
Food grade diatomaceous earth is excellent in the fowl coops – on the ground, in nesting/dusting boxes to prevent lice and mites. Sprinkle directly on fowl feathers to eliminate mites and lice. One thorough application of diatomaceous earth has their feathers growing back quickly.
Food grade diatomaceous earth applied to manure piles keeps fly loads down/eliminated.
Dairy cow owners put food grade diatomaceous earth in burlap bags, so cows can rub against it and sprinkle themselves with DE, which helps to eliminate flies that land on them, as well as lice, mites, and ticks.
Apply to moist kennel areas to reduce odors, dry the area, and prevent pest breeding.
Deodorizing and absorption are natural functions of diatomaceous earth, so add to kitty litter to absorb odors and keep the litter box drier.
A small amount of food grade DE applied to livestock water keeps algae from growing on hot summer days. The amount of DE you need to apply depends on the size and color of the water container and climate temperature. Start by experimenting with a small amount of DE in the water container and increase as/if needed.
Food grade diatomaceous earth is great for compost piles, to prevent breeding pests and control odors. It will not harm earthworms, provided you just apply to the top of the compost or worm farm soil. The earthworms will slowly work the DE into the soil making them healthier, as well as the soil. Of course, if you put the earthworms in a bucket of DE, it will dehydrate them.
YARD, GARDEN, & LANDSCAPE APPLICATIONS: DE’s minerals are great for the yard and gardens.
Apply DE to ant hills. Small ants, regardless of color, may require a few applications to completely eliminate them, as they burrow new hills elsewhere, after we cover their initial hill with DE, but if we keep at it, eventually they disappear. Big ants are eliminated within two applications of a reasonable amount of DE applied to their ant hill. Ants in trash cans can be controlled by either painting DE around the bottom of the trash can or sprinkling it dry around it. They’ll go elsewhere, as they do not like walking over DE. Of course, you will need to find their home to completely eliminate them, but it will keep them away from areas you put DE. Sprinkled around the house foundation keeps new crawling insects from coming inside.
Fire ants will need regular application of DE to eliminate them, but if you continue regular applications, it will eliminate the fire ants.
Mix food grade diatomaceous earth with water to paint our fruit tree trunks with it, like a white wash. The DE keeps ants OFF our fruit trees. 1 cup applied to ½ gallon of water works well. Be sure to stir frequently as the DE settles to the bottom. Good as a white wash for wood fencing too.
1 to 2 cups per gallon of water can be used to apply diatomaceous earth in a backpack or hose end sprayer for problem infestations of mites, aphids, fungus problems, etc. Food grade diatomaceous earth will turn whatever you paint or spray with it white – so it may look like a “white” winter at your place.
Food grade diatomaceous earth will not destroy earthworms, if applied to the top of the soil in worm farms and the worms are allowed to work it into the soil on their own. It is actually beneficial to the worms and compost just make sure to allow the worms to do the work and not bury them in the DE.
OUTDOOR BUGS AFFECTED BY DIATOMACEOUS EARTH: Ants, fire ants, caterpillars, cut worms, army worms, fleas, ticks, cockroaches, snails, spiders, termites, scorpions, silverfish, lice, mites, flies, centipedes, earwigs, slugs, aphids, Japanese beetles (grub stage), bed bugs, fruit flies, corn earworm, cucumber beetles, corn borer, sting bugs, squash vine borers, thrips, loopers, etc., etc.
Pests that lay eggs may require a second application to catch the hatching eggs.
MINERALIZATION: Natural food grade diatomaceous earth contains 15 trace minerals: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, copper, zinc iron, phosphorous, selenium, etc. People note shinier coats, better overall health, better production, etc. in their animals who are fed food grade diatomaceous earth regularly.
FLY CONTROL: Used daily, DE helps eliminate our fly population here used in conjunction with beneficial/parasitic nematodes in wet or moist garden areas. Sprinkle DE on livestock when flies are present. Dust barns, coops, after mucking and throw on top of manure/compost piles. We feed it daily to all dogs, cats, fowl, and livestock, so it comes out in the manure of each animal as well and prevents flies from growing in the manures.
Farmers hang burlap bags full of diatomaceous earth for the cattle to rub against and keep themselves dusted, which eliminates flies and other pests that land on them.
Diatomaceous earth can be put in a backpack sprayer mixed with water to spray your barn or coop buildings. Reapply DE when rain or water washes or wind blows it away.
GRAIN STORAGE & PROTECTION: Codex food grade diatomaceous earth is a healthy non-toxic alternative to chemical contamination of stored grain. When the grain is to be used, food grade diatomaceous earth can be easily removed, but need not be. Since it is “food grade”, makes no difference in taste or cooking quality, and adds 15 trace minerals.
Suggested grain storage use: 1 cup of DE will protect 50 lbs of grain — 5 cups of food grade diatomaceous earth will protect 300 lb’s of grain — 7 lbs. of DE will protect 1500 lb’s of grain or seeds. One source advises only 1 to 2 lb’s of DE per ton of grain.
A study done by ACRES, USA, Inc. advised that after 12 months of storage, the food grade diatomaceous earth treated material had 15 insects, compared to 4884 for malathion and 16,994 for untreated grain.
MORE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH BENEFITS: Food grade diatomaceous earth has been reported in scientific literature to absorb methyl mercury, e-coli, endotoxins, viruses (including polio virus), organophosphate pesticide residues, drug resides, and protein, perhaps even the proteinaceous toxins produced by some intestinal infections. Food grade diatomaceous earth detoxes.
There are some features about food grade diatomaceous earth that correspond with its ability as both a digestive aid and a colon cleanser. The honeycomb skeletal form of diatomaceous earth is found, under microscopic evaluation to reveal a tendency to become filled and clogged with hard debris such as intestinal scale. Food grade diatomaceous earth has not been found to cause any insult to the mucosa or barrier wall.
Diatomaceous earth has a negative charge and bacteria has a positive charge, wherein it is believed by some that food grade diatomaceous earth sweeps bacteria out of the body by trapping it in its honeycomb shaped skeletal form.
There is no withdrawal period when given to milking or feed animals. No toxins. Decreased mortality, increased milk production, decreased mastitis, better feed conversion.
· DE manufacturers who work in diatomaceous earth mines 5 days/week advise inhaling it is not a problem (tho of course, don’t be snuffing it) and we have not had problems when inhaling DE in small amounts. IF you have asthma or some other lung ailment, either wear a mask or be very careful when using food grade diatomaceous earth.
· Do NOT get diatomaceous earth in the eyes. DE is drying to the eyes, so do NOT put it out when you or your pets are down wind of it. DE is drying to your skin, hands, and feet, just as it can be to your pets.
· Do NOT use heavily in carpet. Some advise too much DE causes vacuum problems.
· NEVER use pool filter grade or any diatomaceous earth other than those labeled “Food Grade” for yourself or your animals. It can poison or kill them.
· Some people experience a healing crisis (detox reaction) when beginning DE consumption. If this occurs, reduce the dose, till your body is cleansed, and then increase to the RDA.
· Remember, DE will kill beneficial insects as well, so don’t put it on your flowers where the honey bees go and use wisely.
