Natural Help for Sunburn
- Be soothed by vegetables. Boil some cabbage or lettuce in water, then strain it and let the liquid cool for a few hours in the refrigerator before applying it to your skin with cotton ball. It’s a great pain reliever.
- Thinly sliced pieces of raw cucumber, potato or apple can be placed on sunburned areas such as the forearm. These all have anti inflammatory properties and are also quite cool and soothing to the skin.
- Soak yourself in diluted vinegar. “Pour one cup of apple cider vinegar into a tub of tepid water and soak yourself in it. It’s very soothing to your skin and helps relieve the pain of sunburn.
- Or try aluminum free baking soda and cornstarch. Mix 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of cornstarch into a tub of tepid water and soak yourself.
- Heal with oatmeal. If you find the smell of vinegar or milk too intense, you can wrap dry oatmeal in some gauze or cheesecloth and run cool water through it. Wring out the excess water and apply the cloth for 20 minutes every two to four hours.
- Don’t be too clean. While you have sunburn, stay away from highly fragrant bubble baths, soaps, colognes and perfumes. They may be too drying and irritating to your already parched skin. Stick with mild soaps and don’t scrub too hard when you wash.
- To help cool and moisturize sunburned skin, apply a thin coat of yogurt or aloe vera gel to reddened areas.
- Spray pure lavender water freely on sun-damaged skin to keep skin hydrated, prevent peeling and promote the regeneration of cells.
- Add 2-3 drops of lavender oil to 1 tsp. of a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, and massage into affected area. Or apply diluted St. John’s Wort oil.
